From age 16 to 18, the focus is to prepare students for university studies. The curriculum follows A Level courses in the British curriculum and Pruebas de Competencia Específica (PCE) courses in the Spanish curriculum.
In Key Stage 5, students select which subjects to study according to their interest, performance in IGCSE and the path the individual student is considering studying at university.
At the English School of Asturias, we offer the following A Level subjects:
Year 12
Students normally study for 4 or 5 AS Level courses as well as studying Spanish Language and History.
Year 13
Students continue with 3 or 4 of these subjects.
Students who wish to study at Spanish universities follow subjects in one of the three strands we offer: Health Sciences (Ciencias de Salud), Technological Sciences (Física y Mecánica) and Economics (Ciencias Sociales y Empresariales). These strands are taught in Spanish by our experienced bachillerato teachers.
Year 12
Students take AS Level exams in 4 or 5 subjects.
Year 13
Students complete the full A Level in 3 or 4 subjects.
Students take exams in two or three subjects in the strands mentioned above for specific preparation for entry into Spanish universities. Pruebas de Competencia Específica (PCE) exams are taken at the UNED centre in Gijón.
University
By following the British curriculum and successfully completing A levels our students are very well prepared for future study at university. About half our students go on to university in the UK, while others choose to continue their education in Spain.
